The gathering foot (also known as a shirring foot or separator foot) is a specialized accessory for overlock machines. Unlike traditional sewing, this foot takes advantage of the overlocker's differential feed to create dense and even gathers, sewing and trimming fabric edges in a single swift step.

The main mechanical advantage of this presser foot is its built-in metal separator (a small central flap). This plate allows you to sew a flat layer of fabric on top, while simultaneously gathering the bottom layer of fabric, joining both pieces in the same seam.
